'Is Féidir Liom (IFL)' is foundational Irish. It is offered entirely free on this web site including the book. Our aim is to support parents supporting their children learning Irish. IFL has evolved to what it is now after ten years of 'Irish for Parents' courses. Its author - a primary teacher - has been teaching Irish to children and adults for forty-five years. Your interest in Irish may be a longing to rekindle the positive attitudes you’ve had towards the language from your schooldays, yet you still consider yourself a beginner. As a parent or grandparent, your interest may arise from your desire to help your child at school. As an adult immigrant or non-native you may want an introduction to Irish at the simplest possible level. You want to grasp the basic structure of the language. Whatever your objective, IFL aims to cultivate adults’ positive leaning towards learning Irish.

IFL is a phased 8-week course with one class per week and most classes cover two lessons. It consists of a book, conversation-generating interactives, supplementary materials and card games. Hard copies of the book can be purchased from Navan Education Centre. Details below. For maximum benefit, IFL participants need to have a computer with broadband internet access. IFL is designed to captivate the learner’s interest, through word games and written exercises backed up by on-line multimedia activities. IFL points at patterns in the language and mention of 'grammar' is avoided as much as possible. Committed learners are expected to complete written work and interactive exercises between classes. When using the book on your own (or socially) use the audio pages on the web site to hear the Irish examples on each page of the book. The enthusiastic learner will acquire a reasonable proficiency in speaking, understanding and reading Irish. At the very least s/he will know a basic Irish vocabulary and be able to use an Irish dictionary. Having completed Is féidir liom, learners’ heightened interest and positivity should motivate them to enrol in a suitable course in conversational Irish where the focus is on acquiring fluency.

During Summer and Autumn of 2011 Navan Education Centre trained sixty IFL tutors from around Ireland. 'Is Féidir Liom' courses for parents and grandparents are growing in popularity and the feedback is very positive. The 8-week plan is published here to aid both Tutor and Learner. Click the link to download the work plan: 8-week Course Plan. We invite Education Centres, Vocational Education Committees, School Parents' Associations, Active Retirement Groups etc. to facilitate a foundational course in Irish for parents, grandparents and other interested adults during 2012. You can keep up with developments on our FACEBOOK page at www.facebook.com/isfeidirliom

Úrscéal: We have also developed a continuation course based on "Dlíthe an Nádúir" - a novel for Adult Learners of Irish written by Pól Ó Muirí. Regrettably the novel is now out of print but we have left the course materials available on-line should the book be re-printed.
